Musica Amata

jonathan stokoe - violin, viola

Jonathan started playing the piano aged seven and violin at eight years old.  By the age of fifteen he obtained Grade 8 Violin, Piano and Theory in the Royal Schools of Music examinations.  At the same time, Jonathan was a principal violinist in the Durham County Youth and Northern Junior Philharmonic orchestras.  He won a place to study at the Royal Northern College of Music and was taught by internationally-renowned violinists, Maciej Rakowski and Richard Deakin.  During this time, he participated in all of the college orchestras, studied conducting with Clark Rundell and received an award for outstanding keyboard musicianship.

Since graduation, Jonathan has performed a large number of concerts throughout the UK and has recorded several CDs.  Venues have ranged from small intimate village halls to Wembley arena.  His CD recording entitled ‘Let Me Serenade You’ features some of today’s most treasured short classical pieces by Bach, Brahms, Wieniawski, Monti and Kreisler.

In recent years, Jonathan has continually developed his violin and piano playing.  He gained a distinction in the Licentiate of Trinity College London in piano and also received a distinction in the highly coveted Fellowship of the Royal Schools of Music on the violin.  Jonathan was awarded a Master of Arts degree with distinction from Durham University in 2011.

Jonathan has a passion for music education and has a strong commitment towards the development of music-making in the North-East of England.  He has been a teacher with the Durham Music Service for over ten years and enjoys passing his musical knowledge on to the next generation of budding musicians.
